VPN renewal prices: what you pay after the first term

The big, colourful price on a VPN page is almost always the price for the first term. At the end, the subscription renews automatically — often at a different price. We put the two numbers side by side, from the official pages.

Example: NordVPN Basic, 24 months + 3 free: you pay 94.23 EUR up front. The stated renewal is 139.08 EUR every 12 months.

How to read the table

Total up front = the amount paid at once for the first term. Renewal = the price stated by the provider after the first term. Difference compares the cost per year: the first subscription divided by the number of months (including free months), versus the renewal. We included the 22 multi-month subscriptions for which the provider publishes its renewal price (monthly plans excluded).

How to avoid the surprise

1. Note your renewal date

Set a reminder a week before the end of the term. That's when you decide: renew, change plan or change provider.

2. You can turn off auto-renewal

With most providers, auto-renewal is turned off from your account, and the VPN stays active until the end of the paid period. Check on the provider's site where to do it.

3. Calculate the cost over the whole period

If you want a VPN for 3–4 years, add up the first term and the renewals. A subscription with a low starting price can end up more expensive in the long run than one with a constant price.
